Pfahler Hall Plaza
Collegeville, Montgomery County, PA

RGS developed a detailed plaza design and landscape plan for the Pfahler Hall/Thomas Hall Plaza area. Special consideration was given to the narrow, lineal space which remains as the result of the completion of the adjacent Pfahler Science Hall Building Expansion (also an RGS project). Other site considerations included evaluation of pedestrian traffic patterns and student use, integration of an outdoor classroom, visual approaches to the plaza and consideration of emergency and service access requirements. Site development was controlled by substantial existing underground utilities and a mechanical room directly below the plaza. Additionally, the landscape plan required indigenous, low-maintenance plant materials suitable to the client and the Collegeville Shade Tree Commission. Strategic choice and placement of plant materials were evaluated and selected to combat the unique vertical character of the plaza and surrounding buildings.

RGS Associates provided the following services:
  • Preparation of sketch and concept plan alternatives for the plaza paving and landscaping improvements
  • Preparation of perspective sketches emphasizing form and spatial impact
  • Preparation of layout and grading plan for the plaza area
  • Preparation of paving details for the plaza area
  • Preparation of a planting plan and details showing location, size, genus and species of plant material
  • Preparation of technical construction specifications for plaza and site related improvements
  • Land development/Site engineering
