SpiriTrust Lutheran had a vision to grow its Assisted Living and Memory Support services to meet the needs of their ever growing resident population at its Village at Sprenkle Drive Community. RGS was engaged in collaboration with RLPS Architects, and Warfel Construction Company by SpiriTrust Lutheran, to bring this vision to reality.

The project included two Memory Support Households, each with twelve resident rooms, shared living and dining space, and protected gardens. Two Assisted Living households were designed featuring 26 studio and one-bedroom rooms, shared living and dining space, and outdoor gardens. The project was designed as an expansion to the existing Glatfelter Center located in the middle of the Continuing Care Retirement Community. Careful attention to architectural elevations and site grading was necessary to ensure that the new buildings fit within the fabric of the existing community. The project area contained a number of existing utilities which needed to remain in service throughout construction, posing an additional challenge to the design team.

RGS worked with the leadership team at SpiriTrust Lutheran to develop concepts for the outdoor courtyards and garden areas. The Memory Support Households share a secured courtyard that maximizes interior views and features circular pathways and safe activity areas for those with early stages of dementia and Alzheimer’s. The Assisted Living Households also share a courtyard which was designed for outdoor dining, including areas of shade for comfort, and water features for relaxing sound. A small entry courtyard was also included in the design at the entrance to the new marketing office, creating a welcoming space for friends and family.
