Enhancements at St. James Episcopal Church include modern building amenities, site accessibility improvements, new outdoor gathering spaces and stormwater Best Management Practices provided within a distinctive, urban, and historic context.

Through Smart Growth practices, RGS Associates increased buildable area and reduced stormwater runoff into the Conestoga River. By using these approaches instead of conventional practices, approximately 102,000 gallons of stormwater run-off are captured and filtered on-site. This occurs within a rain garden featuring indigenous plantings among preserved trees and within the courtyard’s sub-surface area. This courtyard and other new outdoor spaces incorporate reused historic brick and stone materials integrated with new permeable brick pavers.

These efforts protected, conserved, and enhanced a key component of the local religious community’s legacy, while addressing responsible stewardship of water resources with progressive green technologies.
