George Street Commons, a transit-oriented, mixed-use development located on the corner of South George Street and College Avenue is located within the City of York’s Central Business and Historic Districts. It involved the redevelopment of an underutilized and partially vacant city block to provide working families with high-quality, affordable living options. George Street Commons represents a small, yet significant piece of the large scale revitalization taking place in the City of York.
Available to families with incomes between 20 and 60 percent of the area’s median income are 28 two- and three-bedroom town homes. The design is sympathetic to the existing surrounding context replacing a parking lot, an abandoned building and a run-down grocery store. Although a high density compact development, the individual residences are spacious open concept units that exceed energy standards with the building envelop design
Included in the development is a 1,700 square foot community center to foster personal growth and professional development of the residents.
Community layout and architectural style respect the character of the surrounding neighborhood. A ‘value engineering’ process allowed the developer to meet all community development goals within the budgetary constraints of available funding sources.
